Driving licence requirements in Bulgaria

To be able to drive in Bulgaria you need to be at least 21 years old and in possession of a full valid driving licence in your country of residence. If the driving licence is not written in the Roman alphabet, please present an international driving licence, together with your domestic driving licence. A driving licence with a photo is mandatory, otherwise you will need to present an international driving licence.

Tolls in Bulgaria

Toll stickers or vignettes are required on all vehicles on Bulgaria’s motorways. Usually rented cars are already equipped with the sticker, please check on arrival.

In Bulgaria you drive on the right hand side of the road. There is a law that requires the use of lights 24 hours a day. Drivers and all passengers must wear seat belts in the front seats. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to travel in the front seat.

Driving a rental car under the influence of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited. In the event of insurance claims you will be fully responsible for any damage to the rental car if driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Winter equipment in Bulgaria

There is no legal requirement for the use of winter tyres in Bulgaria. Between 1 November and 31 March road signs across Bulgaria indicate where the use of snow chains is mandatory in winter conditions.
