Driving licence requirements in Austria
To be able to drive in Austria you need to be at least 18 years old and in possession of a full valid driving licence in your country of residence. If the driving licence is not written in the Roman alphabet please present an international driving licence, together with your domestic driving licence. A driving licence with a photo is mandatory, otherwise you will need to present an international driving licence.

In Austria you drive on the right hand side of the road. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Children under 14 years of age and and under 150 cm in height have to be seated in a suitable child safety seat.

Driving a rental car under the influence of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited. In the event of insurance claims you will be fully responsible for any damage to the rental car if driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Winter equipment in Austria
In winter conditions, the use of winter tyres or snow chains on at least two tyres is mandatory in Austria between 1 November and 15 April. In addition, winter tyres and snow chains are compulsory outside the above dates, if roads are covered with ice or snow.
